Adult Physical Wellness Exams

Adult well-checks are one of the best ways to stay on top of your health, especially as you get older. Adult physical wellness exams give you a chance to learn key information about the current state of your health, identify any health concerns you currently have, and lay out a plan of action in case you have health problems in the future.
We check on your health as an adult by recording your vital measurements and examining key parts of the body, including:
- Heart
- Lungs
- Eyes
- Ears
- Mouth
- Nose
- Head and Neck
- Abdomen/Core
- Skin
Depending on your sex and comfort level, we can also provide testicular, prostate, breast, or pelvic floor exams.
These tests allow us to construct a more holistic view of your unique health portfolio. The adult well-check exam is one of our important tools in ensuring that we don't treat any two patients the same.
Risk Factors If You Go Without a Physical Wellness Exam
Unfortunately, there are plenty of illnesses that can go untreated if they aren't identified by a medical professional. For example, testicular cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer can often be identified in the early stages of a typical adult well-check exam. Catching these or any form of cancer early increases the chances of fighting it successfully.
There are other health conditions that can be identified by a physical wellness exam but which can cause major problems later on if you don't go in for a checkup. For instance, a medical professional can identify hypertension or signs of heart disease while checking your vitals and listening to your heart.
If left untreated, either of these conditions can have major consequences on your quality of life and your overall life expectancy.
By going in for a physical wellness exam, you give yourself the chance to catch potential problems early while also building a good relationship with a trustworthy primary care provider.
What to Expect at Your Visit
Your first appointment at Altaire Clinic will begin with you filling out paperwork that will inform our team of essential health information, such as your family medical history, substance use, exercise habits, and any other health issues you may be experiencing. You should also be prepared to provide a list of any medications or supplements that you are currently taking.
Once you've stepped into the examination room, your medical professional will record your height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and other essential vitals.
Next, your medical care provider will examine your overall appearance, your skin health, your throat, your teeth and gums, your eyes and ears, your heart, your abdomen, and your nervous system's reaction.
Depending on your age and sex, your medical professional can also provide an examination of your groin, pelvis, and/or breasts. Finally, you may have screening lab work ordered to ensure your overall well-being.

Common Questions About Adult Physical Wellness Exams
For starters, you should get a full 8 hours of sleep on the night before your adult physical wellness exam. You should also abstain from sodium-rich, high-fat food for 24-72 hours before your exam. Failing to do so can negatively affect both your triglycerides and your blood pressure. Similarly, you run the risk of your blood pressure spiking if you don't lay off the caffeine for at least an hour before your appointment. Instead, focus on hydrating with plenty of water.
No, this is not a routine screening unless you have symptoms of concern or you have a specific disease such as diabetes.
Employers may require a pre-employment or annual physical exam for multiple reasons. For instance, they may want to minimize the risk of you spreading communicable diseases in the workplace. It may also be the case that your job tasks require you to maintain high levels of physical health and fitness. Even if your employer doesn't require you to take a physical exam, check and see if your employer's healthcare plan offers a discount on your monthly premiums if you participate in the company's wellness program, such as by taking a physical wellness exam.
