Preparing For Your Exam

Even if you’re feeling healthy, you still have a lot to gain from routine wellness visits, including healthy lifestyle maintenance, family planning, vaccinations, and screenings for medical changes.

A wellness visit includes the assessment of mental and physical health but also includes conversations about sexual and reproductive health. Depending on the health needs and age of the patient, a wellness visit can look different for each patient.

There’s no special preparation required for a women’s wellness visit. However, you should come prepared with a list of any questions you may have.

Vitals and Physical Exam

The first part of a wellness visit is similar to a regular primary care visit. You will be weighed and have your vitals taken, including pulse, temperature, and blood pressure.

Discussing Health Concerns

Next, a practitioner will take your medical history to learn about the common health issues and illnesses on the maternal and paternal sides of your family.

Your provider will also discuss your sexual activity and menstrual cycle, which can aid them in providing the best medical care.

This will also be a good time to bring up any health concerns you may have.

Breast Exam

After going over your medical history, you will be set up for your pelvic and breast exams. During a breast exam, a practitioner will look for any unusual bumps and lumps, which can identify any potential health concerns early on. Each breast is examined for potential issues, such as discharge, tenderness, and growths.

Pelvic Exam and PAP

A pelvic exam is a standard part of any women’s wellness visit and it allows a provider to check on the overall health of the cervix and vagina.

Guidelines do vary as to the frequency of your pap smear and pelvic exam, so this is an important conversation to have with your provider.

A pap test lasts for only a few minutes and plays a crucial role in preventing cervical cancer. During a pap test, a medical provider will swab the cervix to collect a sample of cells. This swab is then sent to a lab to look for any abnormalities, such as cancerous cells.

The results of a pap test will be available within a couple of weeks. A normal pap test result means that no unusual changes were found in the cervical cells. An abnormal result doesn’t mean a patient has cancer, but it may require additional testing.

Pap tests can detect early cervical cancer and increases a woman’s survival rate.

What To Expect At Your Visit

The general concept of a women’s wellness visit is to get a view of your current health status. It’s important to schedule this type of annual visit, even if you feel well. Many health issues and illnesses will not cause noticeable symptoms during the early stages. Annual visits with your practitioner can ensure your health concerns are addressed and illnesses are prevented or caught as soon as possible.

An appointment will consist of the following elements:

  • Discussing your medical history
  • General health questions
  • A physical exam
  • Breast exam
  • Pap smear and/or pelvic exam

At an exam, you’ll have the opportunity to talk to your practitioner about ongoing and new health concerns. You will also have a chance to ask questions about your menstrual cycle and sexual health.

During an exam, you may be asked very personal questions, however, the answers to these questions can allow your practitioner to obtain a clearer picture of your health status. Our practitioners will make the entire experience as stress-free and as comfortable as possible.

Additional Testing

If you have any symptoms that require an investigation, your practitioner may recommend further testing. Symptoms such as abnormal vaginal bleeding or ongoing pelvic pain may require testing, however, your medical provider will go over this with you beforehand.
